09-Apr-2004 -- Its a cool, windy Good Friday in the Bavarian town Ottobrunn near Munich. We are considering to go for a walk in the area of Glonn. By at my first look on the map I realize that there is a confluence point just 10 km further. With my spontaneous enthusiasm I can convince everybody to go for the point.

Equipped with a 4-wheel motorized vehicle, the approach to the point isn't worth a story. In the village of Aßling at a distance of 700 m from the CP we parked our ‘KA’. This gave my uncle the opportunity to test the Goto function of the GPS instrument while walking. In a zigzag we reached the point, which is located in a field in a distance of 6 m from the next road. The area around the point is absolutely flat, since it is located in the valley of the Attel. In the distance of half a kilometer the area rises on both sides of the valley.

At the junction of two roads and the nearby stream a beacon has already been erected to mark the confluence point (#3). The reason for this was enormous: the 50th anniversary of the SPD (political party) in Aßling-Loitersdorf. It is a large natural stone with a smoothed disk. Engraved are the cardinal points (but with wrong orientation). Also the position is not at exactly 48 North and 12 East, but about 60 m in western direction. The reasons for this could be:

  1. A different geodetic reference system (but the distance is quite large for that).
  2. The landowner's membership in a party other then the SPD and as a result, his refusal to set up the stone on his land.
  3. The measurement of the point with a single hand-held reciver. In 1997 SELECTIVE AVAILABILITY (SA) was still turned on and accuracy of more than 50 m was common.
