#1: View onto confluence

(visited by Pierre Gander and Brigitta Gander)

07-Jan-2002 -- On our trip through Australia, Brigitte and I (pic 2) always hoped to make it to a confluence...

On January 7th, 2002, starting from very hot Innamincka, we drove via the SW-corner of Queensland to Tibooburra in the NW-corner of New South Wales, the 'hottest town of the state'. This takes hours of tiring drives along rough gravel roads, mud holes, sand dunes and pastoral tracks. As a highlight of the day, we drove 8 kms off the road, along the border fence between the states QLD/NSW and do make it to the exact confluence 142°E/29°S (pic 3). Using our Garmin eTrex GPS-receiver we manage to walk the last few meters as close to the confluence as the remaining positioning error allows, i.e. within a few meters.

The landscape is the barren semi-desert which has partly been made the 'Sturt National Park'. There are vast gibber plains (rocks darkened by desert varnish).

Driving through this national park, we spot dozens of kangaroos and some emus. All looking for some shade underneath a lonely tree or shrub...

Great place!

In the Sturt National Park. The demarcation line with Queensland is passing about 100 m north of the Confluence.
