04-Dec-2007 -- On my semi-circumnavigation journey aboard the Russian icebreaker "Kapitan Khlebnikov", sailing from Stanley, Falkland Islands to Fremantle (AUS) we passed the so far unvisited confluence 54S 37W.

This confluence is only a few miles apart from Possession Bay, the place where Captain Cook first landed on South Georgia on January 17th, 1775 and where he claimed the island for King George III, UK.

This confluence visit has been made possible by the accurate manual steering of the icebreaker by the helmsman and with the kind assistance of the expedition leader Jonas Wikander, Quark Expeditions, USA. The GPS position has been taken by the vessel's main GPS. Besides 70 crew and staff members, 57 passengers took apart the "Far Side Antarctica Semi-Circumnavigation", which lasted for 38 days.

I would like to thank the captain Victor Vasilyev, and 1st Chief Mate Grigory Akulich, who made this visit possible. On that beautiful sunny day we visited the king penguin rookeries at Salisbury Plain and Fortuna Bay. On the following day we visited the old whaling station in Grytviken, including the graveyard of the polar pioneer Sir Ernest Shackleton, who died in 1922.

Not on land, but will definitely have a major view of South Georgia.
