#1: General view of CP to the south west

(visited by Ken Warne and Simon Broad)

16-Sep-2004 -- During my most recent stay at Murchison I took the opportunity to make my third Degree Confluence Point visit in the area. The selected CP is located just north of the Murchison River on Berringarra Station approximately 195km by road north east of the Murchison Settlement.

I discussed my plan with Simon Broad of Milly Milly Station who was at that time also care taking Berringarra. Simon enthusiastically agreed to assist and accompany me to the CP so arrangements were made to visit the site on Thursday 16th September 2004.

On Wednesday I travelled the 160km to Milly Milly Station where I spent a pleasant evening with Simon and Natalie, their daughter Georgie and tutor Rosemary.

The following morning we travelled east 25km to Berringarra Station. Simon took the station ute with his motor bike on board as he had work to do after we had visited the CP and I drove my own vehicle. We left Simon’s vehicle at Berringarra and he travelled by bike, with me following, about 10km north to the Murchison River crossing on the Mt Gould Road. At that point the CP was 1.7km north east of the road. As the road swung to the east just north of the river we decided to follow it in the hope that it would take us closer to the CP. However the CP remained about the same distance from the road until we reached the Berringarra Wool Shed where the GPS showed the CP was now 1.88km toward the south west.

As we had seen no tracks we could use to get closer to the CP, Simon decided to take me in on the bike. However the CP was not located in the usual open rangeland country of the Murchison area but in a flood plain area of the Murchison River densely vegetated with mainly acacia species and knee high grasses. Our first obstacle after leaving the wool shed at 0925 was a fence line which we were able to lay down to get the bike across, then after weaving our way through the thick scrub while dodging holes, fallen trees and negotiating several small dry watercourses we arrived at the CP at 0950.

This confluence point is located north of the main channel of the Murchison River which breaks into several channels in this area and during rain events these overflow and flood a large area of land.

The GPS fluctuated between a zero reading and 0.57 metres at the confluence and indicated a 4 metre error. Altitude at the CP was 353 metres.

After taking the necessary photos and congratulating ourselves we left the CP at 1025 and located the main river channel. We travelled west along the dry river bed arriving at the Mt Gould Road river crossing at 1045 then preceded back to the wool shed to pick up my vehicle.

From there Simon went on his way to do his fence run and I retuned to the Murchison Settlement via Boolardy Station arriving back at 1800 well satisfied and grateful of the help and time Simon had afforded me.
