#1: The confluence

(visited by Adam Chalcraft, Nick Mayer and Ross Remnant)

12-Aug-2002 -- The confluence is an unusually vegetated area near a river. We hired a truck from Reykjavik and set out around Iceland, mainly to see the country but also to pick up as many of the remaining confluences as we could fit into our journey.

The first confluence on our list should be the easiest. It lies about half a degree North of Vatnajokull, the largest glacier in Iceland. After two days of driving along the F910, we reached the F905, which is an excellent road by Icelandic standards.

This goes past some mountains, like most Icelandic roads do, winds across a typically bleak landscape, and then goes a few hundred metres from the confluence. Running East through the drizzle (another permanent Icelandic feature) we arrived at the confluence with a beautiful view (looking North) of a the river to our East. The lighting conditions were poor, but then the sun never rises very high in the sky here.

We took the obligatory photo of the GPS unit and the views North, East, South and West, back towards the truck.

Tomorrow, we aim to go 1 degree North of here.
