A point in the wine county

We did a nice circle in Salta province with Martin as our guide. On our third night we stayed at Cafayate, a very charming town surrounded by miles of vineyard.

A quick GPS check noted that this confluence point was about 8 km away from our hotel and only visited once in 2002. After explained the concept of this “sport” of line-hunting to Martin, he was keen in give it a go.

We took the famous Route 40 – the longest highway of Argentina – for 6 km and found a vineyard with a dirt road appears to head toward the confluence point. We entered the vineyard and the dirt road took us to the end which out us 840 meters from our objective.

Martin and I jumped over the barbwire fence encircled the vineyard and head toward the point and found a dry river bed which made it easier to negotiate. With some zig zag, It took about 20 minutes to reach the confluence point. As the first-time hunter, Martin had the honor to do the confluence dance to zero in the coordinates.

The area is classic highland desert with some very impressive cactus which is a stark contrast to the lush vineyard nearby. The round trip was a pleasant hike and thanks to the vineyard with an access road which made this a much shorter track than the first party visited this point.

This confluence point marked the first point for Martin, and the first South American point for Ray.

Degree of Challenge: 2 – Required a jump over a barbwire fence twice (1= very easy - drive to the point; to 5= a death march – glad it is over)

Scenery: 3– Classic highland desert scenery of the region (Scale: 1= not interesting at all; 5= take your breath away)

Culture-social factors: 3– Fun to do appreciate a large-scale vineyard and starting point is a very charming town (Scale: 1=dull; 5= most stimulating)
