26-Mar-2003 -- After visiting the confluence point 31S 23E, we (myself Gerrit Visser and my son Evan) found a very nice Bed and Breakfast near the town of Loxton. The farm has been in the family for four generations and what must have been the original farmhouse has been converted into a Bed and Breakfast. Breakfast is served in the main farmhouse and is a meal fit for a king.

Off we headed in search of our next confluence point. Once again driving along what one could call the main road closest to the confluence point, we came within about 4 km of the point. We carried on past this point to try and find the farmer and if there were any farm roads that might take us closer. There was a farm road heading off in vaguely the correct direction. Based on the signboard and the condition of the road it appeared that there could be someone at the end of the road. However the road got worse and I started to realize that my chances of finding anyone along the road to get permission from were getting smaller.

However the road was taking me closer and closer to the point. About 2 km from the point we came across a farm worker. I imagine her husband's job would have been to look after the sheep. I asked her if I could carry on driving and go for a walk on the farmer's property. She thought it would be fine and informed me who the landowner was and where I could find him. I decided, as I was close to the point and the farmer was far away, I would record the point first.

The road got worse and took us to within 200 meters of the point. The scenery from the actual point was not quite as impressive (South View, West view and North View) as the scenery getting there. Close to where we parked there was a ruin of an old stone house as well as stone walls that would have originally been used to contain the sheep.

After visiting this point off we headed in search of the farmer. After driving for more than 30 km I could not find a signboard or farm entrance matching the description given to me. So we continued to the town of Sutherland where we stayed at a very smart and well-priced Bed and Breakfast belonging to Rita and Jurg Wagner. The following day we went to see the South African Observatory before heading home, a trip that totalled 2,659 km.
