09-Dec-2003 -- While planning to visit Ngwenya lodge, bordering the Kruger National Park, research showed that two DCP's are in the boundaries of the KNP namely 25S 32E and 23S 31E. The first one was almost on the Mozambique border and within easy reach of our location.
The area is out of bounds to the general public. The authorities were approached at Skukuza to request permission to visit the particular area. We were told that the main concern is poaching which occurs on a regular basis in this area and that rhinos are often the target. Anti-poaching exercises are frequently carried out by the field rangers and pose a threat to the safety of tourists if they are to be allowed in the area. We were referred to the chief warden responsible who is resident at Lower Sabie rest camp. Permission was obtained from Corporal Johnson Makamu, and Field Ranger Alan René Ngobeni was made available to accompany us.
We followed the 4x4 route along the eastern border of the KNP and found the DCP is 4 km west of the border fence. We followed a fire break and it brought us almost right up to the point.
