#1: The Confluence from 50 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz and Elionora)

19-Nov-2014 -- This is the fifth out of 8 reports, describing confluence visits in South Africa, Swaziland, and Lesotho. The previous report is 26°S 32°E. The story starts at 26°S 29°E.

After spending a day in the National Museum and in the Mlilwane National Reserve, we visited this confluence point conveniently on our way to Lesotho. With this visit, we have completed all Confluences in Swaziland – there are only two of them. One is in the extreme north-east with a distance of 400 m to the border of Mozambique, and this one is in the extreme south-west, 3 km to the border of South Africa.

Following the unsealed MR13, we came through the border town Gege – a scattered area of single houses. Just at the southern edge of the village, the Confluence is located on a farm. Interestingly, the farmhouse is located just 10 m from the Confluence.

We came prepared: I had downloaded some pictures of the previous visits of this confluence point. The farmers' family was delighted to see their old farmhouse in 2002 - compared how it looks like in 2014. The kitchen of 2002 has been rearranged in 2014 and the dining room of 2002 has also changed in 2014.

The Confluence is 3 m into a soybean field. The lady was working right at the Confluence, weeding the plants. The Confluence is on a hill, such that there is a far view to the South and the West. The family was very welcoming and interested in the Degree Confluence Project. The boy Lucy hopes to get the opportunity to study economic science in Johannesburg one day.

We left Swaziland at the Gege border (in ca. 5 km distance) and continued our trip through South Africa, reaching the little country Lesotho in the afternoon.
