27-Oct-2003 -- We started our trip to this confluence from Glen Lyon Station next to Lake Ohau. Permission is required from Glen Lyon station for access. We decided to mountain-bike the first 18km from the station, up the Dobson River, to Stony Stream. We then left our bikes and tramped the remaining 5km up Stony Stream. This is a lovely trip with a huge waterfall about halfway (not marked on the map) and a biv about 1km before the confluence.
We noticed quite fresh footprints on the way up and hoped that we weren't going to find that others had got to our confluence before us. But alas, as we found out later, three guys beat us to it only a week beforehand! Congratulations to those three for a great effort.
We knew from a map that the WGS84 position of the confluence was about 60 to 70m above the stream on a shingle scree slope. When we reached the 44°S line, we were in fact within 100m from the confluence and so could claim a successful visit without going any further. But Grant and I wanted to get a bit closer, just to be sure, so we climbed up the rather steep and unstable scree so that we were within 50m of it according to our GPS. Perched on the side of this slope, we managed to get our photos and admire the views, before heading back down and starting on the trip out. Thanks guys for a great day.
