14-Jan-2012 -- We visited this degree confluence 23N 54E while returning from the Rub` al-Khāliy (the Empty Quarter) desert after marshalling in the 2012 Gulf News Overnighter Fun Drive.
This location is in the vicinity of a major oil field and is not far away from a main road. However, reaching the spot requires a serious off-road drive through high sand dunes and involves crossing a major ridge. While doing so, our progress was initially slow but picked up well as the sand became firmer at the higher elevations.
The confluence point is located in the middle of a large sabkha (a salt basin) with tall sand dunes and ridges all around it.
While returning from the degree confluence point, we came across a convoy of Monster Trucks carrying some monster cargo. It was a very pleasant sight to see such huge machines in the middle of nowhere. The rear wheels of the trailer truck were taller than my Toyota Landcruiser.
Our return to the main road was uneventful and the drive was smooth.
