#1: The Confluence from 15 m

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

04-Feb-2013 -- This confluence visit is the second out of a series of 15 visits in Malaysia and Thailand. The previous confluence is 2°N 103°E. It is in turn part of a 4-month bicycle trip starting in Tasmania at 43°S 146°E.

Another day of non-stop rain. But what else should I expect during the rainy season in Malaysia? So I started cycling at 8:30 AM from Labis (100 km from the confluence), had a break from the rain at Segamat and continued on road no. 12 until the minimal distance to my goal was 450 m. I found a track at a distance of 650 m and left the main road there.

The confluence is located in a labyrinth of little roads within an oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) plantation on undulating terrain. These plantations are huge and cover the whole area (and also a couple other confluences on the Malaysian peninsular). The oil can be extracted from both the pulp of the fruit and the kernel. In-between these plantations, there is a dense network of access roads. No wonder that is was possible to get within 28 m one of these tracks. From there, it was a stroll to the precise location.

Interestingly, the plantation has changed completely compared to the first visit 10 years ago. The oil palms must have been cleared and new palms have been planted, giving now a more open space.

After the confluence visit I cycled 10 km further and stayed in the little town of Muadzam Shah for the night. After I checked in a hotel, the rain stopped immediately.
