#1: Confluence point

(visited by John Dag Hutchison)

26-Dec-2016 -- On a brief visit to Marrakesh I realized there was a confluence point nearby. I thought I could take a taxi, but it turned out the taxies were not allowed to go that far out of town, about 60 km. So my guesthouse (riad) organized a car for 45 Euros. The King was in town, this required a bit extra traffic awareness and some delays, but I had time.

The drive was straight forward up N9 until we had about 5-6 km left when we took to the left on minor roads with holes in the tarmac and the odd speed bumps. Then I realized the driver probably needs glasses as he seemed to hit all the holes and was very surprised and apologetic whenever we (suddenly) hit the speed bumps.

The actual confluence point was almost identical to the one described by the last visitors, Ranier Mautz and Elionora. I found that the little building contained a pump which brought up water from a drilled well going 84 meters down. The pump was running day and night and was manned by two people to make sure that the surrounding potato fields were properly irrigated.

While I was taking my photos and speaking in a limping French with the two workers, my driver drifted off to a field a little south of the CP. He came back happily showing me a bag with 10 kg of potatoes he had been given. The workers put the potatoes in plastic crates before they carried them out to the track where trucks would pick them up. I lifted one of them, it probably weighed 25 kg. Seeing how the workers flung them up on their shoulders and walked out of the muddy field was indeed impressive.
