19-Dec-2003 -- This was day three of a five day sailing trip from Marina del Rey to Santa Catalina, San Clemente, the confluence, Los Coronados (islands of the coast of Tijuana), San Diego, and then back home. I would venture that the N33 W119 confluence is among the most remote of the lower 48 United States. The nearest island is San Clemente, 23 miles (37km) to the east -- a US Navy Base restricted except for anchoring at least 300 yards from the shore. The nearest mainland point is Palos Verdes, 61 miles (98km) to the northeast. And, oh yeah, the actual confluence point is at the far edge of an explosives dumping area, which required a rather circuitous approach route.

Although not very exciting conditions for sailing, most of the trip was with glass-like seas which afforded some fantastic dolphin viewing and whale spotting. (Additional pictures from the trip can be found at http://joseph.elliott.name/2003-12/)
