  35°N 139°E (visit #4)

#1: View to south

(visited by Thomas Barthel)

14-Jun-2018 -- Serendipitously I had the chance to have an extra holiday which I used to visit Japan. I did a bicycle trip on the main island Honshu. While this I could manage to visit some confluence points. The first one was the CP 35°N 139°E.

After visiting the beautiful lake and shrine at Hakone, the GPS led me direction south. I passed Mishima and reached Izu, where I had to cross the Kano River. From there I started the way up by using very small but paved roads direction northeast. It was a really hot day and lunch time when I cycled up a beautiful valley which was in use for rice cultivation. On the wayside I saw some old Buddhist stelas and further up, around 1.7 km away from the CP, a mushroom farm in a forest. After passing the highest point the road leads back to the Highway 80. For a short distance I had to take the HWY 80, to take the next junction to the right. This road was in a very good condition and the GPS showed only 800 m distance to the aimed confluence, with a smooth uphill.

I stopped and did a picture of the location from a distance of 98 m. The minimum distance from the right side of the road to the CP was shown with 54 m. At the site I placed the bicycle on the slope down to the creek and refreshed myself at first with the cold and clear water. Now the GPS showed a distance of 35 m, straight uphill into a area sparsely grown with conifer trees. Soon I reached the exact location of the confluence point 35°N 139°N and got all the zeros! 15 years were gone after the last visit.

The vegetation at the location hadn't changed a lot. After the other necessary pictures I went down to my bicycle and continued my trip back, direction northwest. Only a few cars passed by during my visit. Short before I reached the HWY 80 I saw the gate of a shintō-shrine which I visited. After that I had a nice downhill on the HWY 80.

I was really happy for my first successful visit of a confluence point in Japan. In addition to this it was my most eastern visit of a CP so far.
