#1: Confluence lies 448m across the Perak River

(visited by Dinesh Nair and Andrew Kuan)

27-Nov-2002 -- On our first Ride to Nowhere along the west coast of Malaysia, we attempted to visit the confluence of 4N 101E. This lay just about 15km out of the town of Teluk Intan (formerly Teluk Anson) which was one of our night stops. Consulting the map, it showed the confluence as being east of Sungai Perak (the Perak River), and the trunk road we were taking should have passed by it. Our error here was in trusting the map, so much so that I did not switch on the GPS until we were on that road.

Stopped the bikes on the side of the road as we passed Kampung Jejawi, and rode into the village following the confluence direction which was 700m away. We passed thru the kampung (village in Malay), on a dirt track and some windy spots thru the wooden houses on stilts. Kids from the village were mesmerised by a couple of heavy motorcycle cruisers going thru their village and followed us on their bicycles.

Imagine our disappointment when we reached the river bank with the confluence still a good 448m away. It lay across the river on the other side, which seemed like a palm oil plantation from where we stood. Asking the village kids if we could rent a boat to go across didn't help, as the only boatman had gone off to his uncle's place and would only be back in a couple of days. Sadly, we took photos of the confluence from where we were as time would not permit us to double back and attempt the route across the river.

This account is being posted a little late as I had initially lost the photos taken, but a search of my disk revealed them again. While they're still not of the confluence itself, it's an interesting perspective of the confluence from across Sungai Perak.
