23-Jun-2019 -- Like the point immediately to the West, this Degree Confluence Point had been visited three times before, but not in almost 14 years. It lies in a remote desert area of western Utah, close to the Pony Express National Historic Trail - a gravel road - which is also a section of the old Lincoln Highway.
I first attempted to approach the point from the southwest - from Dugway Mountain Road - as my map showed a dirt road heading almost directly to the point. I had hoped to ride my mountain bike along this dirt road - about 4.3 miles each way. Alas, I couldn’t find this dirt road at all - just as Shawn Fleming had failed to find it 14 years earlier. Google Earth satellite imagery from 2013 shows the outline of the road - barely - but it apparently does not exist in any significant form. So, a warning to future visitors: Ignore your maps; there is no route to the point from the southwest.
Instead, just as Shawn Fleming had done, I took another dirt road - from the South, at [39.96290,-112.89205], near the site of the Riverbed Pony Express Station). After passing through two gates, this dirt road ends up passing just 2.07 miles East of the point. I parked at the closest point - [40.01395,-112.96538] - and hiked from there.
The more than 4-mile hike (round trip) was quite easy, across gently rolling, sandy, grass-covered hills. A large section of the hike (about 1 mile each-way) was across a raised flat section of land. Fortunately it was not excessively hot today - only about 80 degrees F.
Unfortunately this point is in an aerial no-fly zone (from the neighboring Dugway Proving Ground), so I wasn’t able to fly my drone to get an aerial view.
