(visited by David Coombs, Choi and Tulga)
24-Aug-2004 -- Since finding out about the confluence project last autumn I have been aware that there was a confluence point very close to Ulaangom (regional centre for Uvs aimag). As I only get to visit Uvs in the summer I wondered whether the point would be taken before I got the chance. Fortunately CP baggers are thin on the ground in Mongolia and it was still open to us. On our first afternoon in Ulaangom we explained the principle of point hunting to Batsaikhan – our host – and he quickly compared it to “real” hunting – “no taste” he said! Anyway he drove us to the nearest point on the road – still 2.4 km away. The point seemed to lie in or behind a large irrigated area of private fruit farms. We tried going round the back of the area but couldn’t get closer than 4km. Back to square one and bluff our way into the fenced area. We got to the back of that area along bad roads in Batsaikhan’s “town” car. After jumping the irrigation ditch we set off on foot for the last 600 metres across rough scrub. The land soon got wet and we had to bog hop the last 400 metres. The weather was also foul and so by the time we got to the point our numbers had dropped to 3. The last picture shows a ger in the general area of the point. Anyway mission accomplished and back to the hotel – cold wash, but still electricity at that stage. Try for 49N 92E tomorrow.
