21-Apr-2002 -- After completing 51°N 122°W on Saturday, I decided to try visiting N51 W121 on Sunday. This confluence had previously been attempted by Dave Patton.

After reviewing the Kamloops/Okanagon edition of the Backroads Mapbook, I realized that a forestry road would approach this confluence very closely from the Deadman Valley. Dave Patton had attempted this confluence from the Battle Creek FSR.

From Cache Creek: Drive east along the #1 hwy along the Thompson River. This is a clear river that eventually feeds into the muddy Fraser River. At 31.5 km turn north along the Deadman-Vidette Road. Pass thru the Indian Reserve and west of the Split Rock formation at 44.6 km. At 51.7 km turn westerly onto road '552-20'. From this intersection you will be able to see the mountain straight ahead of you as your eventual destination.

Road '552-20' quickly turns into '552-21'. At 54.1 km turn easterly onto a road with a green arrow and #43 painted on a tree. Cross the oil and gas pipeline. Here I parked for the night.

The next morning I decided to bike from here along the road as far as I could. Being my first bike ride of the year, I may as well have walked. The road is consistently steep. But coming down was worth it! Cross Gorge Creek at 55.7 km. At 58.5 km turn left onto the road with an orange 22 painted to a tree and a small creek. At 59.8 km turn left onto road with 'BLK 10/14' painted to a tree. Shortly after this I ditched my bike as the snow was getting too deep.

Close to here I took a great picture of the Deadman Valley with those cliffs. At about 63.0 km I crossed the N51 latitude along the road. However I still had 680 meters east to confluence. After passing thru two small ponds and sometimes knee-deep snow, I reached the site. Cold, wet, tired, hungry, etc etc. I took some pics and left.
