#1: Looking soutwest from the confluence

(visited by Jon Petter Storfjell)

04-Jun-2001 -- Actually I had one attempt before on this confluence. It happened 3 days before this successful attempt. The weather started out OK but turned foul after an hour of hiking on the mountain. With dense fog, snow and visibility down to 50 meters, I found it prudent to turn back even if my GPS told me it was less than 600 meters left to the confluence. I am glad I did because the terrain around the confluence is quite treacherous.

To get to the confluence I started out from the city of Bergen. I drove North up through a valley called Modalen. At the upper end of this valley there is a dam with service roads that will take you up to almost 1000 meters altitude.

The weather was very good, with sun and some scattered clouds. From where I parked my car I had to walk almost due west for 5 kilometers or so, to get to the confluence. I tried to walk in on the confluence using only my map. When I figured I was close enough I switched on the GPS, and it turned out my Base Camp was about 15 meters off the confluence.

The confluence is situated in a steep slope turned southward. In the picture with my legs, the confluence is somewhere in the middle. Up to this point the hike had been relative flat. From here it was not. On the confluence I had to wait for some time for the GPS to settle and get a decent PDOP to make myself certain that I was in the vicinity of the point.

The steep slope to the north probably hid some satellites. After being on the confluence for a while, eating sausages, drying sweaty clothes, I set out on a long hike, working on my upper body tan, looping back to my car.
