03-Aug-2006 -- After having left Qeqertaq in the neighbourhood of the confluence point 70°N 51°W the Disko-line ship „Najaaraq Ittuk” set course for Sarqaq where we arrived 1.30 p. m. This settlement is located on South Greenland’s largest peninsula “Nugssuaq”. For geographical details see the 1:250 000 maps “Saga map No. 10 Qeqertarsuaq/Disko O” or “Saga map No. 11 Qeqertarsuup Tunua/Disko Bugten”.

The 70°N 52°W point is in the sea, nearly 1 km from land and 2 km from Sarqaq (#4 and #6). Although there was a slight chance to touch the CP, our best approach kept us at a distance of 1 km (#5) to the east. Thus view west #1 shows the general area. Due to the clear sky we had a good view over the Vaigat sound and to the island Disko. The currently unvisited 70°N 53°W point is located there in the east face of the mesa-like mountains, ca. 900 m above sea level, near to the old settlement Gamle Outdligssat which is uninhabited since its coal mine was closed.

The assumed position of the CP is indicated by a circle in view #8. Although we have no direct proof of 70°N 53°W, it is likely that with the two CPs in this neighbourhood we have the extremely rare situation of a direct view from one to the other! The photos #3 and #7 show the rest of the island Disko.

Water
