28-Feb-2005 -- This is the story of a point and a journey. The journey is from Ulaanbaatar (UB) in Mongolia to Kirriemuir in Scotland, covering 110 degrees of longitude and visiting 15 CPs on the way. The story starts at 47N 105E. This is CP 2.
After the first point we regained the main road, bought fuel for car and passengers and continued our journey. We played games of I-Spy to keep the driver awake but eventually stopped to sleep in the car for about 3 hours at Arvaikheer. One hour before dawn we set off again, and headed south on the main road toward Bayanhongor. From here on the road is not surfaced. In the dark we did not take the best route for the second point. Part of the road was quite snowy but no digging required today
The point lies just behind the soum centre of Khairkhandulaan. We drove up the snowy valley using tracks to winter quarters and then finally up a ridge to within 800 metres of the point. The morning was bright and crystal clear and the short walk blew away any cobwebs from the short sleep. We walked to the top of the ridge and enjoyed the view before returning to the car for picnic breakfast.
