#1: View to south toward Heimefrontfjella

(visited by Antti Samuli and Janne Tikkinen)

06-Jan-2004 -- As a part of Finnish Antarctic expedition FINNARP 2004, small group (4) of us visited Heimefrontfjella some 200 km south from Finnish station Aboa. Travel was made by snowcats with sledges. We managed to drive to Svea (Swedish field camp at Heimefrontfjella) in one day as planned. After service day at Svea, we separated into two groups, one taking snow samples while traveling slower back and me and Janne making aerosol measurements at two points on our two day travel back to station.

On our way back one snowcat broke up, and we had to tow it with another. Luckily that went well, although very slow. Our path went very close of confluence point, only for 1,4 km away, so we towed whole caravan to visit there. As expected, there was nothing special to see at the confluence point, just snow, firn and sastrugi all over. Luckily, from confluence point the Heimefrontfjella was visible (glacier surface makes large waves and low points you can see only few kilometers). After finding exact point and taking photos, we took brief pause with cup of tea and then continued our slow journey toward the Aboa station.

After camping one night at glacier, we arrived to our station just before storm broke up; only few hours later we would have had to stay at the glacier 3 days in tents while wind blew up to 35 m/s!
