09-Oct-2005 -- [This trip was a rather quickly planned expedition, initially with seven unvisited confluence points as targets over a period of nine days. The party consisted of my wife Sandra and myself, and my brother John in a second vehicle. Mostly, the exercise was an excuse to see a bit more of the Pilbara region of Western Australia, and to get away from some unseasonably cold weather in Perth.]
This was the first of our seven proposed visits. We had fairly high hopes of getting to this confluence point - I had talked to Ben and Helen Newland of Sylvania Station and looked at satellite photos of the area, and had come to the conclusion that the area between Savoury Creek and 24°S 121°E was mostly spinifex and red sand dunes.
The track along Savoury Creek was good right through to 12 mile pool, but the creek still had water, and the vegetation was too thick to drive through. We tried a number of potential crossing points, but eventually gave up, given the limited time and our general unwillingness to destroy our vehicles. This CP would require an approach from a more accessible direction - maybe next year!
We reluctantly turned back and headed for Sylvania Station where we had a brief chat with Helen, then continued on towards Newman.
