#1: Overview and North

(visited by Karl Bryk, Marty Davidson, Angelique Graves and Christoph Ollmann)

04-Jun-2006 -- Having spent a pleasant if windy couple of days in Novi Vinodolski on the adriatic coast (a few kilometres south-east if Rijeka) we decided to avoid the Monday bank holiday traffic by returning to Vienna on the Sunday. The trip down on Friday had been an 8 hour drive through hell, in particular the part through Slovenia, so we were keen to avoid this on the return journey.

I had had my eyes on N45 E15 (about 35 km east of Novi Vinodolski) and N46 E16 (North of Zagreb). Marty was keen as she had recently bought a Garmin GPS (but didn't have it with her), Angelique was for trying something new (Dalai Lama philosophy) and Alice (Christoph) showed no interest. Ignoring Alice as usual we decided on N46 E16, a few kilometres off the motorway we were taking.

The return journey was a mixture of strong winds, sunshine and torrential rain, but fortunately it was dry as we turned off the motorway. Following the instructions from previous visit #2 we turned off the main road towards Lepa Ves (by the police station), over the railway crossing (not turning left as instructed be previous visitors - it just seemed to be competely the wrong way) on towards Lepa Ves. Basically following the arrow on the GPS and some intuition we passed through Donja Stubica before finally coming to a junction with a shrine located in someones garden (N46:00:34.0 E15:59:32.8). Turning right here towards Gornja Stubica we climbed, eventually driving down a narrow lane passing isolated houses before arriving right at the CP at approximately 16:30. This was my first Croatian CP and the first for Marty, Angelique and Alice.

Greeted by a barking (but not biting) dog we took the usual photos before returning the same route we had arrived by. The return trip was without traffic jams and uneventful, arriving back in Vienna at 22:00.
