03-Jun-2006 -- This voyage was prepared since a few weeks. Two points interested us. The 51°N 75°W and the 51°N 76°W. We left on June 3, 2006 at 5:30AM from Saint-Étienne-des-Grès (close to Trois-Rivières) for a great trip approximately 130km north of Chibougamau. Our first goal was to succeed in making the 2 points in the same day.

We arrived at Chibougamau at 12h. After a good dinner and gas, we take the "Route du Nord" at 1pm. The North Road is an isolated road of gravel between Chibougamau and kilometer 275 of the "Route de la Baie-James". It is 406km long. We met very little traffic there. According to Google Earth, there were 2 forest roads which we could borrow to go on the point located at 3km at the west of the Lake Robineau. A way which seemed more practicable to us at the km 132 of the "Route du Nord". But this way required a boat to go through Lake Robineau to reach the point. The second trail located at the km 154 was less visible by satellite but seemed to carry us at approximately 1km of the confluence. We thus arrived towards 3PM at the km 154. We chose to start with the trail of the km 154 because we did not have to use the boat. Unfortunately, while arriving in the trail, it had been blocked by an accumulation of rocks. It was impracticable. We thus returned to the km 132. We took the forest road of the km 132 at 3:45pm. This gravel road is very rudimentary. There are bumps and holes everywhere. Provided with a GPS and charts paper printed with Google Earth, we found ourselves through a path among all the junctions of this forest road. We have to turn back several times because we arrive in dead ends. We finally arrived at the Lake Robineau towards 4:30pm. There was a boat access ramp arranged through the undergrowth. We descended the truck close to the lake. We left for a 5km boat ride at 5pm.

The environment around the lake is composed of small spruces and forests devastated by the fires. The lake is immense and is located on the Faunal Reserve Assinica. We informed ourselves at the information center of the reserve Assinica to the entry of the "Route du Nord" to be able to fish but the lake was not yet open. We went where we believed being more close to the point in boat to take a walk in forest. Disappointment, the forest was not practicable. Many laid down trees, the ground were very soft. We did not think to run through 4km under these conditions.

We turned back to try it by the creek of the lake a little more north. We travel approximately 1km in a small brook to arrive finally at the end. The forest was not more practicable there. It is from there that the GPS pictures were taken. It was approximately 6PM. The closest point that we reached is 50° 59.8057N 74° 57.7548W. We were within 8.7km of vehicle.

We came back unsucessfully to the truck at 7pm. We reloaded the truck and reached the North Road at 8:30pm. We returned in Chibougamau to try to reach the point 51°N 76°W the following day June 4, 2006.
