17-Jun-2006 -- Tverskaya oblast’ complete… Near the nuclear reactor

From the point N58E37 we continue our way on the road R84 to Bezhetsk where we turn off again on the road R85 to the west. Not having reached 29 km from Upper Volochek, we turn off to the north toward Udomlya.

Udomlya surprised us. This regional center of the Tver area, bordering on the Novgorod area, strongly differs from other regional centers which we have passed before -- Bezhetsk and Maksatikha. If the narrow streets of Bezhetsk are lined with houses from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, the wide avenues of Udomlya are lined with block houses from the epoch of the decline of Soviet authority. Soon all was explained: the Kalininskaya atomic power station is located here. Probably, this very fact explains why the area of this point is shown in the satellite pictures on GoogleEarth with maximal detail.

The settlement Udomlya (named after the lake with the same name) arose in 1869 at the Trinity (since 1904 Udomlya) station of the Vindavo-Rybinsk railway. In the beginning of the 20th century it was a significant center of trade in forest products. In 1974 construction began on the Kalininskaya atomic power station. It reached the status of city with 1981. In the vicinity of Udomlya lived and worked the artists Levitan and Venetsianov. There are many versions of an origin of a word "Udomlya". For example, according to the version of regional specialist on Udomlya N. A. Arkhangelskiy, it means in the old language – "consisting of parts" ("Ud" – a part, a member), which precisely describes the character of the lake, which abounds with islands, gulfs, and reaches. Though there can be also other associations, as "ud" designates the sexual member also.

Amusing ourselves with philological researches, we have gone around the station to the left and have continued our way to the north up to the village Doronino. We have left the vehicle on the right side of the road at some barn. Up to the point of crossing there remains less than two kilometers to the east. Our route lay across small hills, as this area is on the northeast spurs of Valdai hills, known as Forest (or Udomlya-forest) ridge. On these heights passes a watershed between the Baltic and Caspian seas, between the watersheds of the rivers Volga and Neva.

The hills were covered by meadows, which here and there met small islands of forest. Inside of one of these islands the point of crossing of integer coordinates is also located. The forest here is sufficiently dense and damp. But we have not lost the signal, as within several meters of the point there passed a barely noticeable glade.

So, we have visited the last unvisited point of the Tver area. Thus, we "closed" already our third area (before were Tula and Kostroma). Besides, it was Maxim's 30th point.
