07-Aug-2006 -- After having visited the confluence point 30N 40E, I decided to visit this confluence point 29N 40E also on Monday, 7 August 2006, since I found that it had not been visited before.
This confluence point is located within al-Jawf region in al-Nafūd al-Kabīr desert. The plan was to drive on the new highway, which is connecting al-Jawf region with Ḥā'il region. It is still under construction with only 40% completed. This highway passes through al-Nafūd al-Kabīr desert's center from north to south for 400 km. It is a very big road project connecting the capital city al-Riyāḍ and the Holy Cities of Makka and al-Madīna to the North of Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria. It will be completed in 2008 and will cut the distance between the northern region and the center of the Kingdom by about 50%.
The confluence point 29N 40E is 16 km to the West of this road in a sandy and very difficult to reach area named al-Fulūq. al-Fulūq consists of high sand dunes in the center of al-Nafūd, interlaced with low sandy lands.
