Russian

16-Sep-2006 -- The Golden Mile of the Eastern Roman Empire (Istanbul, Turkey)

Constantinople (modern İstanbul, Turkey) was the capital of the Roman Empire between 330 and 395, the Byzantine Empire between 395 and 1453. The main street of ancient Constantinople was named Mesa. At the start of Mesa was the triumphal arch Milliarium Aureum (The Golden Mile), a vaulted monument from which distances were measured across the Eastern Roman Empire. The coordinates of Milliarium Aureum are N41°00'15" E28°58'20".

Now this arch is in ruins and the current fragment is named Milion. There are several famous buildings located near this spot – the Byzantine Church of Holy Wisdom (now Hagia Sofia), Basilica Cistern (now Yerebatan Sarayı), Hippodrome of Constantinople (now the Sultanahmet Square) and Sultan Ahmed Mosque (or Blue Mosque).
