07-Apr-2007 -- The point is at about 13 km from the tarmac road from Nouakchott to Rosso. An old track starts at the so called place Zem Zem to an old well named Toueirjé ESE at about 10 km. An abandonned village (not placed on maps, even the old ones) is located exactly on the 16° meridian, on this track near the well. At this place we are 3 km north of the confluence point. The problem is to avoid the numerous dry small trees in the soft sandy soil (tires must have a low pressure).
Fortunatly, a north-south oriented fire-guard track goes almost to the point. At the 17° parallel on this track (almost following the 16°W meridian), we can walk around with the GPS. The landscape is made of sand dune alignments (NE-SW), covered with thorny trees (acacia and gum-trees).
The point remains exactly in the middle of a young agressive gum-tree, that is why we could not get all zeros on the GPS. It was 13h15 when the point was reached on Saturday, 7 April 2007. The rains of last summer left good vegetation for camels and goats and there was plenty on the way. A camp of three tents was settled at 2 km of the point.
