(visited by Sabine F and Bernd S)

30-Oct-2007 -- On our tour to Gambia we made an extensive Mauritania round. While navigating the piste from Tidjikdja to Néma we took the chance to visit the 18N 8W confluence after having visited 19N 12W a couple of days before.

Checking the map we already supposed that the point will be on a plateau and we may not be able do drive to it. Coming closer to the spot the anticipation became true. Just another 1.8 km to go from the west side, but with a steep ascent to a 30 m high cliffy plateau. So we decided to try our luck at the east side. We even managed to reach to plateau through a sandy and rocky couloir but the top was blocked with big rocks. No way to drive. So back into the plain, following a sandy riverbed further north until a dead end.

We left the Landcruiser there and started our hike up and over the rocky plateau. On top we had a perfect view into the green plain with grazing camels till a slight sand storm started. 1 hour and 2 km later we reached El Khadra hill and could start the confluence dance. Due to the patience of the navigator we even managed to get a proper zero picture.
