27-Feb-2008 --

2008 Ireland Tour

Continued from 52N-10W

Up and on the road very early again this morning, this leg of today's driving is 76 miles and I arrive at about 8.50 am. The gps reveals that I have successfully visited the point just by sitting in the car. But of course that isn't good enough.

First reckoning indicates that it may be in the field to the right of the very end bungalow. Stand by the side of the road, not quite there. No way through the hedge. So walk along the front of the row of houses, into the field, all the way back past the back of the houses and into the corner of the field.

Much closer this time, exactly on 7W but only 59.2s North. Still not good enough.

Retrace my steps back to where I started. Nothing else for it, once again go and knock on the door. I was motioned around the back by the home owner Mr Sean Byrne. As I walked around the corner of the house the gps showed for a couple of seconds that I was on the exact spot.

It turns out that Mr Byrne knew of the fact that a map grid point lay on his property, but not about the Confluence project. He also thought that it was in his back garden. We chatted about the project for a while and then Sean left me to get on with it.

Take photo's, slightly differently, NE, NW etc while the gps tries to settle down. I never did see the elusive 10 zero's again, the best being 0.1s out. Turns out the CP is in the front bedroom. If I had put the Garmin into averaging mode then I might have got better readings, but I didn't want to outstay my welcome by sitting outside his window for the best part of 20 minutes

Mr Byrne popped out to see how I was getting on and asked if I wanted to go into his bedroom to get it spot on. I thanked him and showed him how the gps worked and that it wouldn't do so inside.

Pack up my stuff and onto the next one for today - 54N-07W
