#1: Looking SW from the confluence towards The Black Tusk

(visited by Sven Loechner and Simone Klotz)

31-Jul-2009 -- Our annual holiday we had spent this year in Canada/B.C. Also we had never tried to visit some confluence points before. So this first one was chosen because it was close to our way to the north of B.C., already visited before and a park trail was already leading close to the confluence point. Perfect for a first test.

So we left Highway 99 and took the Cheakamus Lake Forest Service Road. About 8 km later we arrived at the parking area. We took the trail to the lake and after 1.6 km we left this trail to the right and followed Helm Creek trail down to the Cheakamus River bridge. On the other site Helm Creek trail rises steeply. About 6 km, just before Helm Creek Wilderness Campground, we left the trail for the last 400m. We had first to cross a small gully, followed by a small forest. The main Helm Creek stream was a bit more tricky. Helm Creek was at that time more like a torrent stream not so easy to cross. So we hiked down and up the stream and luckily found around 100 m away from our first estimated crossing point an old tree, perfectly spanning the whole riverbed (see picture taken on the way back).

The final path to our first confluence point took us through a wide open meadow. And then, after some minutes we had our first dot zero point. As quickly as possible, we took all the necessary pictures and then escaped from the millions of flies that found us already...

On the way back we decided to stay at Cheakamus Lake Campground for one night. So we had to hike back to our car at the parking lot and then back the 4 km trail to the lake. Simone and I were both happy this evening to have successfully finished our first confluence point.
