10-Nov-2009 -- On the way back from a rig drilling for oil in the area, I made a small detour to the Confluence. There is a new rig road in the area, built for the access to the rig.
The rig road starts from a small blacktop road, which in turn starts from the main TAP-Line highway approx. 140 km from Rafḥā' in the direction of `Ar`ar. The small blacktop is signposted al-Duwayd. For the rig road, turn right from the small blacktop approx. 35 km from the TAP-Line higway (30°03'27"N 42°07'30"E). The rig road brings you to within approx. 10 km from the Confluence. Just turn off when you feel like and explore local Bedouin tracks to get to the actual confluence point. It's good fun!
(Note: TAP-Line is the Trans-Arabian Pipeline, which was once connecting the oilfields of eastern Saudi Arabia with Mediterranean ports in Lebanon. It is now defunct and being gradually dismantled, but still an engineering landmark and an interesting part of regional history).
