#1: Looking North

(visited by Boyd Blackburn, Hannah Blackburn and Max Blackburn)

29-Jan-2012 -- I'm a math teacher at nearby Smith Middle School in Chapel Hill, NC. Thanks to a generous donation from a parent, I've got 11 new GPS devices (Garmin eTrex Venture HC) to use for class projects. One idea is to visit this confluence as a class, but I decided to check it out with my son and daughter first. This would be our first confluence.

The weather has been warm and beautiful this January with highs often in the 60s and brilliant blue skies. My wife's from Toronto, Canada and loves the North Carolina weather, especially at this time of year.

After driving around some Orange Co. back roads, we settled on a place to park the car that looked like it would involve the least amount of trespassing, and we got lucky. Our path in (off Kerley Rd.) was through a small section of short, new growth pines before opening up into a mature hardwood forest with almost no undergrowth.

Found a skeleton in the leaves just 10 ft from the confluence. My daughter suspects it is a deer because of the long neck.

I will post an update if we make it out here with the class... dftba!
