18-Jun-2014 -- In Klein-Italien

18-Jun-2014 -- Little Italy

Through the Central Asian -Stans: Eastern Bloc atmosphere, yurts and horse milk in Kyrgyzstan, unrest on the roof of the world: along the Pamir Highway in Tajikistan and cities out of 1001 nights in the middle of the irrigated desert of Uzbekistan. This continues the story of 43°N 74°E.

We reach Suusamyr Plateau by the Töö-Ashuunt Pass. White dots are covering the green hills. Some latecomers are still building up their yurts. Down in the Chuy Valley it is already hot. The city inhabitants therefore switch to their nomadic part-time mountain pasture life. Horse herds move freely between the scattered homes. Only foals are tied to poles in front of the tents. Smoke rises from yurts and stalls along the street. Cardboard signs telling that kımız is offered. We refuse to drink the fermented mare's milk this time and take a short break at the statue of Manas on a flying horse. Here at the village Ötmök the road branches off to the mausoleum of Manas who is probably the most important Kyrgyz folk hero. 500,000 verses describe how he once united the Kyrgyz tribes. The epic is now part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists. Outside Kyrgyzstan probably better known is literature of Chinghiz Aitmatov who also came from the Talas Valley behind the large monument.

Following the narrow Chychkan valley now the roadside cardboards offer мед. Our first jar of honey found his store inside the Toyo and the first Lachman took his way into our starving stomachs.

The colorful arid mountains around Toktogul Reservoir successfully hide that one of the planet's biggest environmental catastrophes is taking its course along the Naryn river: International agreements of water use became unstable with independence, variable world market prices and rising energy demand in Kyrgyzstan: In summer less and in winter more water than agreed is drained. So the thirsty cotton agriculture of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan completely wipes out the middle and lower Syr Darya River during summertime while in wintertime floods at Kazakhstan have to drain off to the Aydar lake which has no outflow. The lake Aral which lies at the end of the water system of Syr Darya continuously dries out.

Following the arid canyons of Naryn we finally reach the wide fertile Fergana Basin. It has always been a cultural hub of Silk Road as there is fruit and wine cultivation as well as cotton and silk production. But where more people live there are as well more conflicts and environmental problems: We cross the Mailuu-suu River on which upper reaches almost two million cubic meters waste are left over from Soviet uranium mining. As this is a tectonically unstable region this means there is a sword of Damocles hanging over the drinking water supply of a region with highest population density of Central Asia.

We did not follow the turnoff to the walnut forests of Arslanbob. Our tourist interest is located at the outskirts of Jalalabad. A tarred road leads us along the airport to the north. At Kyzyl-Kyrgystan we took a dirt road along some new build houses straight to the riverbed of Kök-Art. We parked the Toyota at the steep Eastern bank and felt a bit like in Italy: Gravel bed as at the Tagliamento, rice fields as at the Po Valley and behind them the cypresses of the village Doskana. While trucks pull gravel from the river bed the next morning we dance to the middle of the gravel stream to gain the zero at the GPS.

In Maracanã Stadium at Rio de Janeiro somebody else gained a zero at this day too: The world champion Spain loses by 0:2 against Chile and have to fly home - the first sensation of the World Cup.
