#1: To the South

(visited by Hugh Knight)

22-Oct-2014 -- This CP is on the W.A.& S.A. state border and more than 8 years have passed since Steve Leipold had registered it as "Incomplete" when he got within 38 km of the CP, so this gave us an indication that it wasn't going to be easy.

We had driven east along the recently made Wanna Lakes road to the proposed Diatreme Resources mineral sands mine called Cyclone. The owners of the proposed mine have discovered deposits of mineral sands in an area south east of the Wanna Lakes and not far from the W.A. & S.A. border. We drove through the mine area, hoping to find some mining exploration tracks further down to the southeast. We ran out of drilling tracks on the state border 129°E and about 10km north of the CP.

The bush in this area is thicker than other areas, and pushing through this country is hard on vehicles. A 10-km journey requires 20 km or more of new track because you cant go back over your first track as the bushes and small trees that you have pushed over, are standing at an angle to spear into your tyres and radiator if you return over them.

We camped on the border and next morning it was a 215-km journey back to the business road and then launch due west into the bush for another 60 km of flat tyres and bogging on sand dunes, to go to 29S 127E.
