#1: The Confluence from 15 m distance

(visited by Rainer Mautz)

29-Jul-2018 -- This is the 2nd out of 6 reports reaching confluence points in Iceland during a one-week bicycle trip. The story continues from 64°N 22°W.

Although I had strong headwinds and rain during the day, I found myself within 1 km distance to this confluence in the evening. Since there is hardly no night in summer, I decided to visit this confluence in the evening hours despite difficult terrain. The weather had calmed down, but looking towards the confluence, I saw a big rock face ahead.

Nevertheless, I started my hike. First, I had to walk across a meadow with tall grass. Then the terrain’s inclination increased and I had to climb over loose gravel. Luckily, I found a hiking route with a signalling pole every 100 m which I could follow. But even following the route was difficult and a little dangerous. Cautiously I ascended, assuming the confluence would be somewhere in the steep rock-face. But to my surprise I had to climb all the way to the top and finally found the confluence on a high plateau with grassland. At the confluence, there was a great view on the famous Hekla Volcano in 30 km distance.

It also took me an hour to climb down (climbing down was more difficult than climbing up). At 10 PM I was back at my bicycle. I spent the night in a nearby shelter that was not locked.
