31-Jul-2018 -- This is the 4th out of 6 reports reaching confluence points in Iceland during a one-week bicycle trip. The story starts at 64°N 22°W and continues from 64°N 20°W.
This was one of the most exciting cycling days of my life. The confluence is located 3 km from the famous Hot Spring Landmannalaugar in the Friðland að Fjallabaki National Park. All the roads in the park are only for 4x4 cars – or for 1x2 bicycles. However, I had to carry my bicycle through 28 streams or rivers that day. Some rivers where almost up to my waist – others where quite shallow. But they all had in common to wet my shoes with icy water.
After taking a bath in the hot spring I continued cycling for another 5 km, until I reached a good starting point for a short hike of 480 m. I ascended over a rocky groundcover with some moss as the only vegetation.
The confluence is located almost on the top of a hill with a great Panoramic view. The day was rainy and stormy – only those 5 minutes at the confluence were sunny – what a coincidence!
After the visit, I continued cycling until 9 PM spending the night at the camp Hølaskøl. This route is absolutely beautiful with groundcover of dark ash, white ice and green moss along the mountainous track.
