13-Jul-2019 -- This is the fifth out of eight reports reaching or attempting confluence points during a 2-week bicycle trip around Iceland. The story starts at 65°N 20°W and continues from 66°N 18°W.
The next day I got up at 3:30 AM and started cycling shortly afterwards. After 50 km and three hours of cycling, I had reached the harbour town Husavik. Here, I had a huge breakfast in a supermarket.
Equipped with a full stomach, I was ready to cycle up the mountain to the confluence point. To my surprise, I was able to come within 8 km to the confluence point on a recently asphalted road. But therefore, I had to cover the remaining distance on a very stony track. After 2 hours of strenuous cycling, I parked my bike at a distance of 255 m from the confluence point.
The hike turned out to be very pleasant but required ascending very steeply upwards. At the confluence, there is a great view to the north – being able to see the coast and beyond.
The confluence itself is on a high plateau. The ground is covered with boulders and very low growing bushes in-between.
After the confluence visit, I continued the rough track down to the coastal road. In the evening I reached Asbyrgy National Park and spent the night in a nearby guesthouse.
