24-Jul-2021 -- This narrative continues from 26S 50W.

At the sixth day of our vacations trip by the south of Brazil, we spent the day visiting the touristic destinations of Florianópolis city, capital of Santa Catarina state. At the morning, we went to Municipal Market, and at afternoon we went to Canasvieiras Beach. It was too cold to swim, but we stayed in a restaurant at the beach. As in the case of Curitiba city, cited in the previous narrative my wife, my son and I had visited Florianópolis at year 2007, 14 years before.

At Thursday, seventh day of our trip, we left Florianópolis not so early, because we would travel few kilometers in this day. We left the island, where lies the city, and crossed to the continent by beautiful Hercílio Luz Bridge. Although I know Florianópolis since 27 years ago and had been travelled to there about ten times, this was the first time that I crossed Hercílio Luz Bridge, because it had been blocked to cars from 1982 to 2019, due to structural problems and successive postponements of the necessary and complicated reformation. That’s a very interesting crossing, because the suspension bridge is totally metallic, including the car lane. The Hercílio Luz Bridge, main symbol of the city, is 95 years old and is the longest suspension bridge of Brazil, with 821 meters long and an interspace between the towers measuring 339 meters.

We travelled by about 220 kilometers. When we were 10 kilometers to our destination, São Joaquim city, the road was blocked and we must wait more than one hour. Luckily, there was a restaurant exactly at the blocked place, where we enjoyed to have lunch and to appreciate the beautiful landscape of mountains and Araucarias.

São Joaquim is considered one of the coldest cities of Brazil, where it’s common to snow during the winter. This is the reason we decided to spend a night there. However, unfortunately, the weather turned much warmer and, to our surprise, when we arrived there, the temperature was 20°C, warmer even than Florianópolis.

The inn where we stayed, on the other hand, hadn’t a thermal isolation as good as the places where we had stayed in the previous days and, at night, with the fall of the temperature, we felt a lot of cold at the room, softened only by the blankets.

At Friday, eighth day of our trip, we descended the Rio do Rastro Mountain, an extremely sinuous highway by a precipice. We passed by Criciúma city and caught BR-101 highway. We crossed the interstate line, entering in Rio Grande do Sul state, and we stopped to take a snack, replacing the lunch.

After the snack, we resumed the trip and caught other highway, in this time up in a mountain, up to Cambará do Sul small city where we would spend the night. Before of going to the inn, however, we caught a dirt road, 18 kilometers long, up to Aparados da Serra National Park, where we appreciate the beautiful landscapes of Itaimbezinho Canyon.

Back to the city, we went to the inn and spent the night. We travelled in this day about 380 kilometers.

At Saturday, ninth day of our trip, I woke up early in the morning and went straight to an attempt to 29S 50W confluence. I started to travel about 7:00 alone, leaving my wife and my son sleeping a bit more at the inn. I headed by some kilometers on asphalt road and, then, I turned right and started the dirt road leg, 13 kilometers long.

Although it was already clear, the sun still hadn’t come out, and the more I advanced by the dirt road, the more the temperature was decreasing, up to a minimum of -0.5°C. I had the opportunity to take beautiful photos of the landscape, with the sunrise and the fog.

The road was in bad condition, with a lot of stones, and turned worse and worse. When I was 860 meters beeline to the confluence, the way turned very complicated due to the excess of stones. Despite the short beeline distance, there was a dense forest between the place where I was and the confluence and, in order to avoid it, it would be necessary a detour of 3,900 meters hike when going and plus 3,900 meters when coming back. I had already spent a lot of time driving on dirt road, due to the slow pace, and although it would be possible to hike the remaining distance, it would consume much time and would delay our trip. Then, I opted to give up of this confluence and made all the way back to the inn.

I met my wife and my son, I took the breakfast and we resumed our trip about 9:30, heading to Porto Alegre, capital of Rio Grande do Sul state. We travelled more 230 kilometers. In this way, the car registered 3,000 kilometers since the start of our trip, in Montes Claros. We spent the rest of the day walking in the city, especially at the edge of Guaíba River, where there is a leisure area with many bars and restaurants.

I had travelled to Porto Alegre in January 2017, four and half years before, as I cited in 30S 51W and 35S 59W confluence narratives. However, in that occasion, we used the city only to spend the night and didn’t have the opportunity to know it, as we made now.

This narrative continues on 29S 51W.
