30-Jul-2021 -- This narrative continues from 25S 51W.

We spent the night at Guarapuava city, Paraná state. On Friday, fifteenth day of our trip, we woke up early in the morning and headed to the last confluence of the trip. We went to north of Paraná state and, after travelling by about 220 kilometers, we turned right at BR-369 highway between Fênix and Barbosa Ferraz cities, and started the dirt road leg, only 1.9 kilometers long. On the way, the car registered 5,000 kilometers since the beginning of our trip, in Montes Claros.

It looked like a very easy confluence, as almost the previous ones. However, initially, we faced a dirt road in very bad condition, with many stones. We passed by an open gate and headed by what looks like a farm. I drove a bit more and stopped in front of an electric fence across the road.

When we stopped the car, a person talked with us, asking if we want that he remove the fence. I opted not to do this, because we are closer enough to the confluence and, if we go ahead with the car, we must came back soon, and we risk to face the electric fence armed again, when coming back.

I left the car and started the hike, 710 meters long. I hiked easily the remaining distance and registered the confluence 34 meters to the exact point. I didn’t get all GPS zeroes because the confluence lies in a dense forest. As in the previous confluence, the temperature was warmer then some days before, registering 12°C.

After registering the confluence visit, I made the way back to the car and we came back. However, to our surprise, the gate, which was open when we are going, was now locked, blocking our way out.

I went up to a nearby farm to ask the opening of the gate. A person informed me that I must go up to the other farm. I went up there, and other person informed me that his brother locked the gate and he went out, but was already asked to come back to unlock it. He said also that his brother would spend about 20 minutes.

We got worried with the situation, because we was informed that the farms used to lock the road due to many robberies that occurs in the region. We informed us that it would be possible to exit by the other side of the road, but we must face a very bad road and we must also remove the electric fence that blocked us when we are going to the confluence.

In any case, we opted to wait some minutes, relying that the person that has the key was coming. And, in fact, he arrived, and unlocked the gate to us. This incident caused a delay of about 50 minutes.

Back to the highway, our next objective would be come back home. We were about 1,450 kilometers to Montes Claros and it was almost noon. Considering our average pace during the trip back home, I thought that we would spend the rest of the current day and more two days to finish the trip. However, Google Maps informed us that it would be possible to spend only the remaining of current day and one more day, if we travel a bit more then we used to do in the previous days. When evaluating again, I realized that, in fact, the relief, from the place where we were, would change completely. While the regions where we had passed on the three last days (the north of Rio Grande do Sul, the interior of Santa Catarina and the south of Paraná states) are very mountainous, leading to an average of only 530 travelled kilometers per day, the regions that we would travel from then (the north of Paraná, the interior of São Paulo and the northwest of Minas Gerais states) are very flat regions, which would allow a much better pace.

We stopped to have lunch at Jandaia do Sul city. After the lunch, we calculated that, in order to accomplish our objective of arriving home at the end of the next day, we must cross the interstate line, entering in São Paulo state, cross almost all state and stop at Ribeirão Preto city, already relatively near the line with Minas Gerais state. We did it. Initially, we passed by Londrina city, and I remind a leg of the highway where I had driven ten years ago, in a trip to this city that I had made to visit confluences, as cited in the narrative that starts on 23S 51W confluence.

Sometime after, we crossed the bridge over Paranapanema River, interstate line between Paraná and São Paulo states. Then, we passed by Assis and Marília cities. After, we crossed Tietê River. As I cited in 22S 49W narrative, the Tietê River, in this region, is very different from when it crosses São Paulo city. In central region of São Paulo state, the river is clean, and is still utilized as leisure and swim area in some cities, and it is much wider. At the place where we crossed the river, it is 2,900 meters wide. Beyond the current trip and the cited 22S 49W narrative, there had been a third opportunity in which I had crossed Tietê River in central region of São Paulo state, cited in 21S 50W narrative. These were three different crossing places, but near each other.

After crossing the river, the highway where we are travelling, the SP-333 one, starts a huge straight, 57 kilometers long. This straight reach the third position among the biggest straights in highway that I had ever observed in my trips by Brazil, placing after two straights in Bahia state, one 82 kilometers long and other 64 kilometers long (cited, respectively, in 14S 44W and 13S 46W confluence narratives). On the other hand, it overcame a straight that I had observed also in São Paulo state, 48 kilometers long (cited in 22S 50W confluence narrative).

The night fell and, as I had cited, I must drive a bit more in this day, in order to accomplish the objective of arriving home in the following day. We finally arrived at Ribeirão Preto city about 19:40. We travelled in this day about 830 kilometers, the biggest distance in one day since the beginning of our trip.

At Saturday, sixteenth and last day of our trip, we woke up early in the morning and resumed our trip back home. We passed by Franca city and crossed the bridge over Grande River, interstate line between São Paulo and Minas Gerais states. Then, we passed by Araxá city and crossed a small mountainous leg in Serra da Canastra. As cited before, the two last days of trip were by an extremely flat region, and the Serra da Canastra was barely the unique mountainous leg that we had crossed.

We stopped to have lunch near Patos de Minas city. After the lunch, we resumed the trip and arrived home about 18:10. We travelled in this day about 820 kilometers.

We concluded our 16-days trip, totalizing 6,486 kilometers. It was our second biggest trip by car. The first one was still that that we had made in January 2013, from Fortaleza city, Ceará state, to Minas Gerais state and back to Fortaleza, which totalized 7,081 kilometers. The narrative of that trip starts at 6S 38W confluence.

In relation to the number of visited confluences, on the other hand, this trip overcame all others, with nine successful visits. The greatest number until then had been the trip that we had made in September 2020, by Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo states, in which I had registered seven confluences. The narrative of that trip starts at 18S 50W confluence visit.

As I had cited in the first narrative of this trip, the South Region of Brazil was the region where I had least visited confluences, with only 5 visits. Now, with these nine visited confluences, all in South Region, it has now 14 visits. In absolute terms, it is yet the region with fewer confluences. However, considering that the South Region is the smallest one of Brazil, it leaves the last place, proportionally, and reaches the third place, with 24.1% of confluences already visited by me. In first place is Southeast Region, where I had already visited 71.9% of confluences. And in second place is the Northeast Region, where I had already visited 30.9% of confluences.

In order to conclude this narrative, it worth to remark an interesting detail. In this trip by the three states of the South Region of Brazil, we went by the coast and came back by the interior. Although I had searched for relatively easy confluences for the whole way, as I always make in big trips, I only had managed to visit one confluence when going and all other eight confluences had been visited when coming back. The reason for this disparity is a bit complex, and is based in some suppositions.

First of all, if we take as object of analysis not the South Region, but the São Paulo state, it’s evident the fact that, in this state, the coast region is very mountainous and the rest of the state is very flat, making the confluences near the sea much harder to be accessed. I had already the opportunity to travel by almost the whole state and had can verify this fact. This fact reflects also in my historic of visited confluences in this state. Analyzing the confluences of São Paulo, it’s possible to say that three out of them are near the coast. I had visited only one out of them, that is, 33%. The confluences in the interior of the state, on the other hand, are 17, and I had already visited 15 out of them, that is, 88%. The higher degree of hardness of confluences near the coast, then, reflects directly in my visits.

The big chain of mountains located at the coast of São Paulo state is known as Serra do Mar. Although this big difference between the mountainous coast and the flat interior is very strong in São Paulo state, it is also viewable in other states, because the Serra do Mar starts in Rio Grande do Sul state and finishes in Rio de Janeiro state. The existence of this chain of mountains so near the coast is an excellent hydrologic advantage to Southeast and South Regions of Brazil, because this makes the rivers of these regions, in general, flow to the interior of the country, and not directly to the sea, making these regions big reservoirs of water. Big rivers like Uruguai River, Iguaçu River, Paranapanema River, Tietê River and Grande River, among others, flow in west direction, to the interior of the continent, and only then, they go to south and end in Atlantic Ocean, between Argentina and Uruguai. We had crossed all these five rivers during this trip and all of them were cited in the narratives.

Back to the question exposed at the beginning of this analysis, related to the fact that I had only visited one confluence when going and eight confluences when coming back, the existence of Serra do Mar only partially explains this disparity, because the region in which I had visited the eight confluences when coming back is also very mountainous, due to the so called Serra Geral. In other words, in South Region, both when going and when coming back we only had passed by mountainous regions, at least up to the moment in that I had visited the last confluence. Then, it’s necessary to search by additional explanations.

I think that other plausible explanation is the fact that the Serra Geral region, although mountainous, is more occupied by farms, and this turns the access to confluences easier. The Serra do Mar region, on the other hand, is predominantly occupied by preserved forests. A huge forest strip known as Mata Atlântica had originally occupied this entire coast region, and there are still many preserved areas. It’s also visible the fact that the mountains of Serra do Mar are much steeper, including areas with extreme reliefs like Serra do Rio do Rastro and Itaimbezinho Canyon, which we had the opportunity to visit in this trip.
