18-Jan-2024 -- Another race against nightfall! I flew into Kansas City, off the plane at 3:50pm and parked at this pulloff with my rental car at 5:10pm. Back at car before 5:24pm sunset. It was a straightforward scurry across two short plowed fields and the railroad tracks, 1-2" of snow underfoot and a temperature of 33°F. No fences. Some conspicuous trash on the ground precisely at the scrubby forest confluence (beer bottles, old light bulb), which indicated to me that the farmer of this land or someone close is aware of its significance. A single train rushed westward about a minute after I crossed the tracks the first time. Other than that silence, other than the occasional car on Golden Road to the north.
Southward to Blue Mound, KS for the night, then onward to three more SE Kansas confluences in the morning.
