19-Aug-2025 --

After 6 weeks travelling through Denmark and Sweden I ended up a few kilometres North of Sälen on the 18th August. Compared to 2024 it seemed to me that Autumn had come early to Sweden and my worry was that it would soon get too cold for me to cycle or hike and spend time sleeping outside. With this in mind, I made the decision to drive North and try and grab N63 E14. This involved a drive of approximately 300km, which for me was a long days drive.

Around 2 p.m. on the 19th August I arrived at Häggsåssjön , South-West of Östersund, a short distance as the crow flies from the CP. I had done some research before my trip and decided I had 2 possible options. Either from the North or from the South. I decided to try from the North first.

I drove off the main road North-West of Häggsåssjön and followed a bumpy gravel road for about 3.5 km to the point N63.018, E13.989. According to my GPS it was 2.4km as the crow flies to the CP. I set off and managed to cover 400m through a wooded area before the terrain changed to swampy ground and after getting very wet feet gave up with 2km to go. At least the hike back to the car was a short one.

Shortly afterwards it started to rain and there was a cold wind blowing. A decision had to be made - go and try to get to the CP from the South straight away or wait until the next morning. It was already 5 p.m. but the thought of the weather worsening the next day convinced me I had to try straight away.

Around 6 p.m. I made it, after a long drive on gravel roads, to the point 62.994, 14.006. This was 660 metres as the crow flies from the CP which seemed a much more doable distance. My only fear was swampy ground again. As it turned out there was some swampy ground but it was possible to navigate around this and after 1 kilometre I was at the CP.

All the usual photos were taken and after 30 minutes I was back at the car. I had wet feet again but this time from the wet undergrowth.

This was the first visit to this CP for over 23 years (21st March 2002) and only the second visit ever. Importantly, it was a non-winter visit so it's possible to visit this CP without using touring skis and waiting for the swampy ground to be covered in snow. This will mean there will be many visits in the future from the Swedish CP hunters.

Let's see !!
