#1: Ship’s GPS

(visited by Jeff Dye)

23-Nov-2025 -- It turns out that finding a Degree Confluence Point at sea is relatively easy. All you need is a ship with a GPS wayfinding system and a willing captain. We were on an Antarctic expedition aboard the Atlas cruise ship World Navigator. We departed Ushuaia, Argentina. I approached Captain Tomas Rito about DCP. He had not heard of the project but was very interested. The next day he invited me to the bridge to show me that his 7th waypoint on 22 November would be 63S 60W. We would hit the point that evening just before midnight. With much anticipation I watched the coordinates on the map channel in my room and went to the bridge when we got close. The next step was also easy. I took a video of the GPS screen at the helm and edited for the frame where the point was found. We were in the neighborhood of Deception Island and it was dark so the cardinal direction pics don’t show much. North shows the view back into the ship lounge. There was a Viking ship in the distance but pic was blurred. Aside from the beautiful (daytime) scenery and fantastic care provided by the entire crew, Captain Tomas and his team was especially gracious. The ship normally uses a 1 nautical mile turning radius. They also begin a turn before a waypoint. They understood I wanted to be exactly on the point so his instructions were to wait until we passed over the point before beginning the turn. The observation time ended up going past midnight to 00:00:36 on 23 November 2025.
