English Narrative

Our travel group, consisting of 9 people in 2 vehicles, set off around noon on July 11, 2026. It had been raining in Ulaanbaatar that morning, so we waited until the rain stopped before departing. Our goal was to spend the Naadam holiday exploring the northernmost region of our homeland Khuvsgul Province particularly the western shore of Lake Khövsgöl and the beautiful natural region known as the Darkhad Depression, while traveling together as families. Our itinerary included:
  • Visiting Ar Bosgot Canyon and Duut Spring in Ulaan Uul Sum.
  • Reaching the coordinate N51°, E099°.
  • Exploring the valleys of the Tengis and Shishged Rivers in Tsagaannuur Sum and visiting the confluence where the two rivers meet. (The Shishged River is considered one of the headwaters of the Yenisei River, which flows into the Arctic Ocean.)
  • Visiting Khoridol Waterfall on the road from Renchinlkhumbe Sum to Khatgal Sum, crossing the Khoridol Saridag Pass, experiencing the wonders of Mother Nature firsthand, and finally relaxing on the shores of Lake Khuvsgul in Khatgal.

For us Mongolians, the Naadam holidays during the summer are often the only opportunity to travel together with our families.

On the first day, we spent the night at a relative's summer cabin near the center of Bulgan Province. On the second day, we camped beside the Gun’s River just before reaching Ulaan Uul Sum in Khuvsgul Province. On the third day, we stayed at a hotel in the center of Ulaan Uul Sum. The following morning, we planned to reach the intersection of N51° and E099°, so we headed toward the center of Soyo Bag. When we arrived around noon, preparations were underway for the Darkhad Khurd Naadam Festival, which was scheduled to take place two days later.

From there, we hired two local guides and a young boy to accompany us to the coordinates. One guide was an environmental inspector Batsukh, the other was local herder Bat-Erdene, accompanied by his son B. Erdenebayar. We crossed the wooden bridge over Khugiin Gol (river), located behind Soyo Bag, and continued toward our destination. Along the way we encountered a group of Polish tourists traveling to the western taiga. They were particularly interested in experiencing traditional Mongolian life, especially the lifestyle of the Darkhad people who live in forest teepees (urts). Apparently, they travel by vehicle to a certain point and continue their journey on horseback.

About ten kilometers west of Soyo Bag, we reached a ranger station. Guided through muddy, marshy terrain, we eventually left our vehicles near a winter camp (uvuljuu) and continued on foot. Reaching our destination proved quite difficult. The coordinate was located high atop a steep mountain, deep within dense forest. The day was hot, and the mountain was swarming with flies and mosquitoes. Because the climb was so challenging, five members of our group stayed behind by the riverside while the rest of us continued. As we climbed, some members developed allergic reactions, and the insects became even more relentless. Two people turned back midway, leaving five of us to continue.

We followed the edge of the forest until we reached the mountain summit, then carefully navigated through the trees toward our destination. Since the coordinate lay beneath thick forest cover, accurately locating it with GPS was somewhat difficult. After confirming the location, we took the necessary photographs as evidence and began our descent. Those who participated in verifying the coordinate were B. Khongor, S.Batsukh, P.Bat-Erdene, B. Erdenebayar, and myself. Thanks to the assistance of the ranger and local herder, whose knowledge of the area was invaluable, our mission was successfully completed. We descended the mountain around 6:00 PM.

Our journey then continued to the Taiga Tur Resort, located northeast of Soyo Bag. Situated along the banks of Khugiin Gol, it offered comfortable cabins and excellent facilities. After enjoying the shower and sauna and getting a good night's rest, we set off the next day toward the Shishged and Tengis Rivers in Tsagaannuur Soum. Passing through the center of Tsagaannuur Soum, we crossed the floating bridge over the Shishged River and, after driving more than 30 kilometers, reached the confluence of the Shishged and Tengis Rivers. Both rivers, especially the Tengis, were wide, swift, and full of water. Only a small number of tourists visit the area, mainly for fishing. On the way, we crossed Bogoch Pass, a rugged mountain pass with steep ascents, sharp descents, rocky terrain, and countless obstacles. It truly tested the skill of every driver. After rainfall, the pass would likely be impassable. We had hoped to stay at one of the tourist camps, but discovered that they only accepted guests with advance reservations. We couldn't even find a place to eat. Although we planned to pitch our tents beside the river, we were fortunate enough to stay in a traditional ger prepared by a local family, where we enjoyed a comfortable night's rest.

The next morning we began the return journey from our furthest point, passing through Tsagaannuur and Renchinlkhumbe before heading toward Khatgal Sum across the Khoridol Saridag Mountains. Along the way, we happened to pass through the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Renchinlkhumbe School, where we even managed to enjoy some festive Naadam khuushuur. On the climb toward Khoridol Saridag Pass, we stopped to admire Khoridol Waterfall. The scenery in this region was truly breathtaking with towering mountains unlike anything we had seen before, rivers flowing through deep valleys, and steep mountain roads covered with loose rock and landslides. Once again, it was a true test of the drivers' abilities. After crossing the pass, we accidentally followed a dry riverbed and became slightly lost. Turning back, we found the correct route and began climbing Ulkhun Pass. This pass was completely different from Khorydol Saridag. While the previous pass had challenged our driver's skill on dry rocky terrain, Ulkhun tested both the drivers and the vehicles in deep mud and marshes. Even though it hadn't rained for several days, the conditions remained muddy because of the many natural springs in the area. After getting lost, becoming stuck in the mud, and driving throughout the night, we finally arrived in Khatgal at dawn, exhausted and sleepy. We stayed overnight at a nearby resort, and the following day began our journey home.

Our trip came to an end as a wonderful adventure filled with unforgettable memories, beautiful landscapes, and meaningful experiences. We all returned home happy and deeply satisfied with the journey.
