22-Oct-2026 -- Travel Journal: An Expedition Across Dornogovi Province October 20–21, 2026

Our expedition team set out from Ulaanbaatar on the morning of October 20, 2026. Our primary assignment was to conduct scheduled inspections of Khan Bank's transaction centers in all soums (districts) of Dornogovi Province, including the provincial capital. Alongside this work, we also had another objective in mind: if circumstances permitted, we hoped to visit two confluences within Dornogovi Province that had not yet been physically visited or documented by anyone.

On the first day of our journey, we traveled through Olon Ovoo, Dalanjargalan, and Airag soums before spending the night in Saikhandulaan Soum. On the second day, we passed through Mandakh Soum and stayed overnight in Khatanbulag Soum.

Although our original plan for October 22 was to travel directly to Khövsgöl Soum, we decided to change our route. Early that morning, we departed from Khatanbulag Soum and headed toward one of our target coordinates.

The location was situated approximately 20 kilometers off the paved highway connecting Khatanbulag Soum with the Khangi Border Crossing. This newly constructed highway appeared to be heavily trafficked, particularly by coal transportation trucks.

As we approached our destination, the wind grew stronger and a severe dust storm began to develop. Along the way, we passed through a place called Agaruut, which appeared to have once served as the administrative center of an old rural brigade.

From the point where we could get closest to our destination by road, we left the paved highway and continued along an unpaved track toward the target coordinates. Driving across open terrain in the Gobi requires considerable caution, as thorny shrubs and bushes can easily puncture vehicle tires. We therefore proceeded carefully, following faint local tracks whenever we came across them.

Once we had reached a point relatively close to our destination, we eventually had to continue across trackless terrain to get closer to the exact coordinates. We parked our vehicle near the target location, leaving the engine running, and walked the remaining distance carrying our GPS device. We then completed the verification and documentation of the geographical coordinates.

At the site, we recorded the GPS display, took photographs in all four cardinal directions, and captured a team photograph. The strong winds made it difficult to keep the camera tripod steady, but fortunately, we managed to take all the necessary photographs.

There was a traditional Mongolian nomadic dwelling (ger) belonging to a herder family not far from the location. However, no people or livestock were visible, and the dwelling appeared to be unoccupied at the time.

Our expedition team consisted of myself and Mr. B. Batnasan, a telecommunications and security systems installation technician from Tergeltech LLC.

Having successfully completed the coordinate verification, we continued our journey toward Khövsgöl Soum in Dornogovi Province to carry out our next assignment. Along the way, we encountered wild Mongolian gazelles' close relatives, the khulan (Mongolian wild asses), a rare and protected species native to the Gobi Desert. This unexpected encounter undoubtedly added another memorable experience to our journey.

Khutag Mountain – An Ancient Landmark of the Gobi
To the northeast of the geographical coordinate N43°, E110° lies Khutag Mountain, a sacred and remarkable natural landmark. Rising 1,436 meters above sea level, Khutag Mountain is the highest mountain in Dornogovi Province. According to researchers, Khutag Mountain began to emerge approximately 900 million years ago from the floor of a vast but relatively shallow inland sea connected to the Pacific Ocean. Over millions of years, the mountain gradually rose. By approximately 800 million years ago, the sea had receded and eventually dried up, leaving Khutag Mountain standing prominently above the surrounding landscape, with its ancient geological structure preserved.

Considering that the Arctic, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans are believed to have formed approximately 200 million years ago, while the towering Himalayan mountain range began to emerge only slightly more than 30 million years ago, Khutag Mountain is truly an extraordinarily ancient geological formation, predating even these great natural landmarks.

For generations, Khutag Mountain has therefore been revered as a sacred and protected mountain, regarded as a spiritual guardian and an important object of traditional worship and veneration.
