23-Jun-2001 -- This confluence 43N 118W is southeast of Burns, Oregon, East of Highway 78 in the Oregon high desert and just a few miles north of Burns Jct., Oregon. After leaving Burns, we traveled Southeast until we hit the Iron Mountain road, unsigned, and went in east about 4 miles until we found Ryegrass Res. and a fence marked ‘No trespassing’.
Looking at the maps, we found that by going back a few hundred yards, we could hit another road on the BLM round and go around this blockage back to the Iron Mt. road. Doing so is real rough, as you have to go through a wash out from a creek, flop through a lot of cow pies and rub some big sage brush. About 1.2 miles down Iron Mt. road you will be as close as you can get on the road and you will have to stomp some brush and crawl a fence, but the ground is flat (see the pictures), and the brush is not bad. A few Horned toads crawling about but nothing real serious.
This is not a wet weather trip, as most of the roads to here are dirt and/or little gravel and flash flooding should be expected when the thunder storms are out and about. Also, you will be the highest item around for several miles during a lightning storm. You should have a high clearance rig with fuel and good tires to hit this one.
