06-Jul-2001 -- The fence-post shown in picture #1 with my GPS hanging on it is exactly at the confluence. The dirt road which may be seen in the background of this picture runs right on the Kansas-Nebraska state line. That boundary was supposed to run along the 40th parallel. Did the 19th century surveyors miss by 50 feet, or is this due to some projection distortion? When I found the landowner to ask for permission to walk out into his bean field, he said, "I bet I know what you want." Then he went on to tell me that he had caught somebody with "some satellite thing" wandering around his fields last week looking for "the place the lines crossed." After warning me to watch out for the bull he left to cut hay and I went into the bean field to look for the place the lines crossed. This is an area of rolling hills and lush crops, as can be seen from the rest of the pictures which were all shot standing next to the confluence fence post.
