03-Jun-2000 -- It was a slow Saturday, so my son Cooper and I
decided to do some backroad exploring in the mountains east of town. Just
east of the Snake River plain in Idaho is an extensive area of mountains and
rangeland with very little habitation. This area has a multitude of dirt roads
criss-crossing the land. We spent about 30 miles on dirt roads approaching this
confluence from the north. On the way, we saw cattle grazing and an abundance
of wildlife, including a moose that galloped across the road about 25 yards in front
of us as we drove. The confluence is in the middle of sagebrush covered
rangeland, about a quarter mile off the dirt thoroughfare. An easy hike over fairly
flat terrain (avoiding the gopher and badger holes) brought us to the confluence
point. It was reasonably late in the day, making the picture taking a challenge
with the lower sun angle.
